Global Metro Status is a public transit aggregator that visualizes live vehicle tracking, schedules, and service alerts. The information displayed on this website is obtained from official government open-data feeds, public transport operators, and transit databases. We are deeply grateful to the following organizations and databases for making their transit data openly available to the public under open government and creative commons licenses.
1. Main Data Aggregators & Registries
To discover and maintain accurate configurations for our global transit feeds, we utilize registries and mapping tools from the open-source transit community:
- The Mobility Database: We utilize GTFS feed configurations, catalog lists, and sources registry data from the community-maintained Mobility Database. This database is an invaluable tool that standardizes feed registries globally.
- Transitland: Feed routing and operator indices are cross-referenced with the Transitland Platform, which aggregates GTFS and GTFS-RT feeds globally under various open data licenses.
2. United Kingdom (UK National Rail & Local Feeds)
Our real-time departure boards and train positioning systems in Great Britain are powered by the following official public data streams, available under the Open Government Licence v3.0 (OGL):
- Network Rail Open Data: Sourced from live Network Rail TRUST and TD message systems (STOMP feeds) under the OGL.
- Rail Delivery Group (RDG): Timetable schedules, fares, and reference corpus definitions sourced from Darwin LDBWS and static timetable feeds.
- Transport for London (TfL): Tube, bus, and Overground schedules and live status feeds sourced from the TfL Open Data portal under the TfL Open Data License.

- Île-de-France Mobilités (IDFM): Metro, bus, and regional RER timetables, routes, and live vehicle positions in the Paris region are sourced from the Île-de-France Mobilités Open Data portal.
- SNCF Open Data: National and regional TER train timetables and live positions are compiled using the SNCF Réseau open data APIs.

4. Other International Transit Feeds
As Global Metro Status expands coverage to new countries and regions, we consume open transit feeds registered via public agencies under their respective national open government licenses. This includes, but is not limited to:
- European Union: Feeds consumed from national transport portals (such as Spain's datos.gob.es, Germany's mCLOUD, Italy's dati.gov.it) in accordance with the European Union Directive on Open Data and the reuse of public sector information.
- North America: Feeds from transit operators in the United States and Canada (such as MTA New York, CTA Chicago, SFMTA San Francisco, and TTC Toronto) sourced under their respective Open Data Terms of Use and Creative Commons attribution requirements.
- Global Operators: General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) feeds published directly by regional municipalities and private concessionaires under public service reuse authorizations.
5. Licensing and Reuse
Users of Global Metro Status should note that while our code and visualization layers are copyrighted, the underlying GTFS schedules and real-time feeds are available to the public under their respective open licenses. If you plan to build applications using this transit data, you must query these official data portals directly and adhere to their respective terms of service and attribution requirements.
6. Data Removal and Concerns
If you represent a municipal transit agency, local council, or public transport operator, and you have any questions, updates, or concerns regarding how your open data feed is parsed, cached, or attributed on our site, please reach out to us at [email protected]. We will happily address your request.
